We all have something we cannot live without when moving abroad. For many, it’s a family pet, a treasured heirloom, or even a vehicle. Cars and motorcycles are often more than just transport — they provide comfort, stability, and style, and sometimes even reflect who we are. It’s no surprise that people want their vehicles to travel alongside them when relocating internationally.

Relocating a vehicle involves more than just shipping it overseas. Understanding the rules, paperwork, and practicalities can save you time, money, and stress.

Key Considerations for International Vehicle Relocation

1. Insurance and Registration:
Before moving, obtain an insurance quotation for your destination country and review vehicle registration rules. Your vehicle may need temporary or full registration, depending on local laws.

2. Choosing the Right Moving Company:
Not all “vehicle specialists” are created equal. Roll-on, Roll-off (RORO) services might seem simple, but unforeseen customs charges can arise. Using a moving company with a bonded, customs-approved depot ensures your vehicle remains secure, accessible, and fully compliant.

3. Domestic Vehicle Transport in Australia:
When using car transport services within Australia, legally every vehicle must be registered to the new state, the time period of when this must be completed differs for each state, but generally, it’s between 30 and 90 days.

4. Documentation Requirements:
No matter where your vehicle is going, customs will require specific paperwork:

  • Proof of Registration (last 2 years for New Zealand)

  • Certificate of Insurance (last 2 years for New Zealand)

  • Bill of Sale (including purchase date and price)

  • Valid Passport & Visa

Without these, customs authorities may refuse entry for your vehicle.
