Your moving volume helps determine the space needed for transport and is one of the factors used when preparing a moving quote.

Estimate the Volume of Your Move

Select the items you’re planning to move and the calculator will give you an estimated total volume in cubic metres. If you’re unsure about an item, choose the closest equivalent — the result is a planning estimate and can be refined later.

What Does m³ Mean When Moving House?

UNDERSTANDING MOVING VOLUME

Cubic metres (m³) measure how much space your belongings take up.

Removalists use volume because a move is not just about how many items you have. A large sofa, dining table or stack of boxes can take up very different amounts of space, so cubic metres give a more useful picture of the size of the move.

Your estimated volume helps work out things such as the space needed in a truck or container and is one of the factors used when preparing a moving quote.

For example: ten medium boxes might not sound like much on a list, but once they are packed together with furniture, appliances and other household items, the total volume can add up quickly.

Think of a space measuring one metre wide, one metre deep and one metre high.

1 m × 1 m × 1 m = 1 m³

What People Often Forget to Include

COMMONLY MISSED ITEMS

It’s easy to remember the large furniture and forget the smaller things spread around the house. Before you finish your estimate, check areas such as the garage, balcony, laundry, storage cupboards and outdoor spaces.

Items that are often missed include:

Bikes and sporting equipment
Outdoor furniture and barbecues
Garage shelving, tools and storage tubs
Suitcases and boxes stored in cupboards
Lamps, mirrors and artwork
Vacuum cleaners, ironing boards and other utility items

A few forgotten items may not make much difference, but an entire garage or balcony can change the volume more than you expect.

Easy to underestimate: boxes, storage tubs and belongings already packed away in cupboards or the garage still count towards the final volume.
