Understanding your moving estimate

Your estimate is based on the move you are actually planning, including where you’re moving from in Australia, your destination in Ireland, the approximate volume of belongings you’re taking, property access and the moving services you select.

Rather than applying one standard price to every home of the same size, the Palmers calculator uses the details of your move to provide a more useful indicative estimate. Your final moving proposal may change once your shipment volume, access, moving date and any additional requirements have been confirmed.

What affects moving costs?

Route & Destination

Where you’re moving from in Australia and where your belongings need to be delivered in Ireland can affect shipping, transport and destination costs.

Volume

The amount of furniture, cartons and household contents you’re moving is one of the biggest factors in determining your moving cost.

Moving Service

Shared / Groupage and Dedicated / Sole-use services are priced differently. The best option depends on your shipment volume, destination, budget and preferred timeframe.

Vehicles & Specialist Items

Cars, motorcycles, trailers, pianos, safes and other large or specialist items can change the space, handling and transport required for your move.

Property Access

Stairs, lifts, parking restrictions, long carrying distances and difficult access at collection or delivery can affect the resources needed for your move.

Packing & Additional Services

Professional packing, specialist handling, storage and other services you choose can affect the overall cost of your relocation.

Moving to the United Kingdom Cost Calculator FAQs
How much does it cost to move from Australia to Ireland?

The cost of moving household belongings from Australia to Ireland depends mainly on how much you are taking, your Australian origin and Irish destination, and the moving service suitable for your shipment.

The Palmers Ireland Moving Cost Calculator uses the details of the move you are actually planning rather than applying one broad price based only on bedroom count.

Two similar-sized homes can contain very different volumes of furniture, cartons, garage contents and outdoor belongings. Use the calculator above to get an indicative Palmers estimate based on what you are taking and where you are moving.

What is included in my Ireland moving estimate?

Your Palmers estimate is based on the door-to-door household move and the services selected for your relocation, rather than international freight alone.

It takes into account your collection and delivery locations, shipment volume, moving service and the relevant options you select in the calculator.

Your detailed Palmers proposal will confirm exactly what is included for your move and identify any costs or services outside the agreed scope. This is important when comparing international moving prices, as a shipping or freight price alone may not represent the total cost of getting your belongings from Australia to your new home in Ireland.

What affects the cost of moving from Australia to Ireland?

The main factors are shipment volume, route, moving service, property access and any additional services required.

Volume is particularly important because international moves are based largely on the amount of container space your belongings require. Your destination and service choice also affect the cost, while stairs, restricted parking, long carries or difficult access can require different arrangements at collection or delivery.

That is why Palmers asks about the move itself rather than simply using the number of bedrooms in your home to calculate a price.

How long does it take to move household goods from Australia to Ireland?

The timeframe for moving household goods from Australia to Ireland depends on your route and whether your belongings travel by Shared / Groupage or Dedicated / Sole-use service.

The Palmers calculator shows the indicative timeframe for the service available for the move you are planning, allowing you to consider cost and timing together.

Shared / Groupage generally offers better value when you have some flexibility around delivery, while Dedicated / Sole-use provides container space specifically for your move. Shipping schedules, port movements, customs clearance and final delivery arrangements can all affect international moving timeframes.

Should I choose Shared / Groupage or Dedicated / Sole-use when moving to Ireland?

For Palmers customers moving to Ireland, Shared / Groupage is generally the better-value option when the shipment does not require a full container and there is some flexibility around delivery timing.

For larger household moves, we also compare the cost of a Dedicated / Sole-use container. Once the shipment reaches a certain size, the price difference between sharing container space and having container space specifically allocated to your move can become much smaller.

Where both options are suitable, the calculator allows you to compare the available moving services before deciding which makes more sense for your move.

Do I need to know the cubic metre volume of my belongings?

No. You do not need to know your cubic metre (m³) volume before using the Palmers Ireland Moving Cost Calculator.

If you already have an approximate volume, you can use it. If not, the calculator can help estimate how much you are moving based on your home and the belongings you plan to take.

Palmers uses volume because bedroom count alone can be misleading. Two three-bedroom homes can contain very different amounts of furniture, cartons, garage contents and outdoor belongings.

What do I need to know about Irish customs and Transfer of Residence relief?

If you are moving your normal residence from Australia to the Republic of Ireland, you may qualify for Transfer of Residence relief from Irish Customs Duty and VAT on eligible household and personal belongings.

Irish Revenue generally requires qualifying goods to have been in your possession and use for at least six months, and you normally need to have lived outside the EU continuously for at least 12 months before moving.

Palmers recommends starting the customs process early rather than waiting until your shipment is already approaching Ireland. Irish Revenue currently advises that the completed C&E 1076 application and supporting documents should be submitted around two weeks before your goods arrive.

Palmers can help you understand the documentation required for your shipment, while eligibility for the relief is determined by Irish Revenue.

What can cause my Ireland moving estimate to change?

An estimate can change when the final shipment, property access or services required are different from the information originally entered into the calculator.

Common examples include taking more belongings than initially estimated, adding furniture or cartons, changing packing requirements, or discovering different access conditions at collection or delivery.

The more accurately you describe your move at the beginning, the more useful your estimate will be. If there is something unusual about your move, let us know so it can be considered before your final proposal is prepared.

Is the Ireland Moving Cost Calculator my final moving quote?

No. The calculator provides an indicative estimate rather than your final moving quote.

It is designed to give you a useful starting point for planning your move and understanding the likely cost before going through the full quotation process.

If the estimate looks right for you, select Get my detailed quote. The Palmers team can then review your move details, clarify anything that needs checking and prepare your tailored moving proposal.
