Understanding your moving estimate

Your estimate is based on the details you provide, including where you’re moving from in Australia, your destination in the UK, the approximate volume of belongings you’re taking, property access and your selected moving service.

It’s designed to give you a useful starting point while planning your move. Your final quotation may vary once we confirm your inventory, access, moving date and any additional requirements for your relocation.

What affects moving costs?

Route & Destination

Where you’re moving from in Australia and where your belongings need to be delivered in the UK affect shipping, transport and destination costs.

Volume

The amount of furniture, cartons and household contents you’re moving is one of the biggest factors in determining your moving cost.

Moving Service

Shared / Groupage and Dedicated / Sole-use services are priced differently. The best option depends on your shipment volume, destination, budget and preferred timeframe.

Vehicles & Specialist Items

Cars, motorcycles, trailers, pianos, safes and other large or specialist items can change the space, handling and transport required for your move.

Property Access

Stairs, lifts, parking restrictions, long carrying distances and difficult access at collection or delivery can affect the resources needed for your move.

Packing & Additional Services

Professional packing, specialist handling, storage and other services you choose can affect the overall cost of your relocation.

Moving to the United Kingdom Cost Calculator FAQs
How much does it cost to move from Australia to the UK?

The cost of moving from Australia to the UK can vary considerably depending on how much you’re moving, where you’re moving from and to, and whether your belongings travel as part of a Shared / Groupage shipment or in a Dedicated / Sole-use container.

At Palmers, we don’t estimate an international move from bedroom count alone. Two three-bedroom homes can result in very different shipment volumes once furniture, cartons, garage contents, outdoor belongings and other items are taken into account.

Your price can also be affected by property access, packing requirements, specialist items and the services required at your UK destination.

Our UK Moving Cost Calculator uses the details of the move you’re actually planning to give you a more meaningful indicative estimate before you speak with one of our moving specialists.

How Palmers calculates your estimate?

Your estimate uses Palmers’ moving rates and the details of the move you’re planning — including your Australian origin, UK destination, shipment volume, property access and selected services. Where more than one moving service is suitable, the calculator can compare the available options.

How long does it take to move household goods from Australia to New Zealand?

The timeframe depends on your route and whether you choose a Shared / Groupage or Dedicated / Sole-use moving service.

For Shared / Groupage moves, Palmers generally allows around 5–10 weeks from collection. Your belongings travel as part of a consolidated shipment, so the timeframe includes consolidation as well as shipping, clearance and final delivery arrangements.

For Dedicated / Sole-use moves, Palmers generally allows around 4–6 weeks from collection. This service provides greater control over the shipment and timing, although international moving dates are still indicative. Vessel schedules, port movements, customs and biosecurity clearance can all affect the final delivery date.

Should I choose Shared / Groupage or Dedicated / Sole-use?

For Palmers customers moving from Australia to the UK, Shared / Groupage is generally the better-value option when your shipment does not require a full container and you have some flexibility around delivery timing.

For larger household moves, we also compare the cost of a Dedicated / Sole-use container. Once the volume reaches a certain point, the price difference can become much smaller.

Where both options are suitable, the Palmers calculator lets you compare the estimated cost and timeframe so you can decide which service makes the most sense for your move.

Do I need to know the cubic metre volume of my belongings?

No. You do not need to know your cubic metre (m³) volume before using the calculator.

If you already know your approximate volume, you can enter it directly. If not, the calculator can help estimate it based on your home and the belongings you are taking.

Palmers uses volume because bedroom count alone can be misleading. Two three-bedroom homes can contain very different amounts of furniture, cartons, garage contents and outdoor belongings. Your final volume can then be confirmed before your detailed moving proposal is prepared.

What do I need to know about UK customs and Transfer of Residence (ToR)?

If you are moving your normal place of residence from Australia to the UK, you may be eligible for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, which can provide relief from UK customs duties and charges on qualifying personal belongings.

For most household moves where ToR relief is being claimed, an application is made to HM Revenue & Customs using the ToR1 process. HMRC assesses eligibility and, if the application is approved, provides the information required for the customs declaration.

There are eligibility conditions. Generally, these include having lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months before moving, having possessed qualifying goods for at least six months and importing them within the required period after becoming resident in the UK. Different rules or exceptions can apply depending on individual circumstances.

It is worth looking at ToR early in the planning process rather than leaving it until your belongings are ready to leave Australia. Your Palmers team can explain the moving and shipping documentation required for your relocation, while HMRC determines your eligibility for Transfer of Residence relief.

What can cause my UK moving estimate to change?

A UK moving estimate can change if the belongings, access or services required for the final move are different from the information used to calculate the original estimate.

One of the most common reasons is shipment volume. You may initially estimate a certain amount and later decide to take additional furniture, more cartons or belongings that were not included when the estimate was calculated.

Property access can also make a difference. Restricted parking, stairs, lifts, long carrying distances or other access difficulties at collection or delivery may require different arrangements from those originally allowed for.

Changes to packing requirements, moving service, destination or other services can affect the estimate as well.

That is why the Palmers calculator asks more than simply where are you moving from, where are you moving to and how many bedrooms do you have? The more accurately we understand the move at the beginning, the more useful the estimate becomes.

If there is something unusual about your move or you are unsure how to answer a question, tell us. It is much easier to account for it while planning your relocation than to discover it later in the process.

Is the calculator estimate my final moving quote?

No. The UK Moving Cost Calculator provides an indicative estimate, not your final moving quote.

Its purpose is to give you a realistic starting point for planning your move and help you understand the likely cost before going through the full quotation process.

If you would like to take the next step, select Get my detailed quote after completing your estimate. The Palmers team can then review the information you have provided, clarify anything that needs checking and prepare a tailored moving proposal based on your actual requirements.
