Moving a wine collection requires more than ordinary removals

A wine collection can represent years of careful buying, significant value and bottles that may be difficult or impossible to replace.

Moving it properly means considering more than simply placing bottles into cartons. The collection needs to be assessed for quantity, bottle type, packing requirements, handling, transport conditions and, where required, storage or international shipping.

Palmers can coordinate the process from collection through to delivery, including specialist packing, secure storage and international relocation requirements where applicable.

How we move a wine collection

01

Understand the collection

We establish the approximate number of bottles or cases, collection value where relevant, collection and delivery locations, access conditions and whether storage is required.

02

Plan packing and handling

Different collections require different approaches. Bottle quantity, original cases, individual bottles, unusual formats and high-value wines can all affect how the collection should be packed.

03

Pack and inventory

Where Palmers is completing the packing, bottles are prepared for transport using appropriate cartons and protective materials. For larger or more valuable collections, inventory requirements can also be discussed before collection.

04

Transport or store

The collection can be transported directly to its destination or placed into suitable storage if the move dates do not align.

05

Plan international requirements

For overseas moves, our international team coordinates the shipment alongside the customs and destination requirements associated with the relocation. Palmers’ wider international service already includes export document preparation, customs clearance and storage coordination.

What matters when moving wine

Temperature

Wine should be kept at a stable, cool temperature to help protect its condition over time. Prolonged heat and significant temperature fluctuations can affect how wine develops and may also place pressure on the bottle seal as the contents expand and contract. For longer-term storage, consistency is generally more important than short-term variation.

Humidity

Humidity is particularly important for bottles sealed with natural cork. Very dry conditions over extended periods may contribute to cork deterioration, while excessive humidity can damage labels, cartons and timber cases. For collectors, preserving the condition of the bottle and its packaging can be important, particularly for older or higher-value wines.

Vibration

Wine is best kept as undisturbed as practical. Continuous vibration can disturb sediment and is generally undesirable for longer-term storage, particularly for older wines. During transport, appropriate packing, loading and handling help reduce unnecessary movement and protect the collection throughout the move.

Light

Prolonged exposure to strong light, particularly UV light, can affect wine over time. This is one reason wine is generally stored in dark or low-light conditions. Clear and lightly coloured bottles can be more susceptible than darker glass, so limiting direct sunlight and unnecessary light exposure is an important part of protecting a collection.

Moving wine internationally

Moving wine overseas can be more complicated than moving ordinary household goods. Alcohol may be subject to separate customs requirements, duties, taxes, quantity limits or import permits depending on the destination.

Before a collection is packed for export, it is worth confirming what can be imported, what documentation may be required and whether there are any additional charges at destination.

Palmers can help coordinate wine collections as part of an international move, including the packing, transport and storage requirements that form part of the broader relocation.

For larger or higher-value collections, we recommend reviewing the collection before shipment so any unusual bottle formats, original cases or destination requirements can be identified early.

Tell us where you’re moving and approximately how much wine you’re taking. Our international team can help you understand the next steps.

Things to check before moving wine overseas

  • Whether alcohol can travel with your household-goods shipment
  • Destination import limits or restrictions
  • Duties, taxes or other destination charges
  • Permits or declarations that may be required
  • Whether an inventory of the collection is needed
  • How the collection will be stored before or after shipping
  • Whether every bottle is practical or worthwhile to move

Rules vary by country, so requirements should be confirmed for your specific destination before the collection is packed.
