Where you’re moving from and to plays an important part in the cost. Local and interstate moves are calculated differently depending on the distance and route involved.

The amount of furniture, cartons and household contents you’re moving is one of the biggest factors in determining your moving cost.
Property Access
Stairs, lifts, parking restrictions, long carrying distances and difficult access can affect the time and resources needed for your move.

How accurate is the moving cost estimate?
The estimate is designed to give you a realistic indication of your moving cost based on the information you provide. Accuracy will depend largely on your route and how closely the volume entered reflects what you’re actually moving. Your final quotation may also take into account property access, moving dates and any additional services you require.
Do I need to know the exact volume of my belongings?
No. If you already know your approximate volume in cubic metres, you can enter it directly. If you’re unsure, the calculator can help estimate your volume based on your home and the belongings you’re planning to move. The closer the estimate is to what you actually take, the more accurate your moving cost indication will be.
How much do removalists cost in Australia?
There isn’t one useful Australia-wide removalist price. The cost depends on the move you are actually making — how much you’re taking, where you’re moving from and to, property access and the services you need.
A small local move across Sydney is a very different job from moving a full household from Melbourne to Queensland or Darwin.

Do I need to know the cubic metre volume of my belongings?
No. You don’t need to know your cubic metre (m³) volume before using the Palmers calculator.
If you already know your approximate volume, you can enter it. If not, the calculator can help you estimate it based on your home and what you’re actually taking.
We use volume because bedroom count can be misleading. Two three-bedroom homes can be completely different moves once you include furniture, cartons, garage contents, outdoor items and how full the home actually is.
Why can two similar-sized homes have very different moving costs?
Because the number of bedrooms doesn’t tell us how much is actually moving.
A lightly furnished family home may have a relatively modest volume, while an apartment or smaller house can be packed with furniture, cartons and stored belongings.
The route also matters, as do property access, packing requirements and large or specialist items.
That’s why the Palmers calculator asks about more than home size before estimating your move. The aim is to understand the move you actually have, rather than assume every three-bedroom home is the same.
